Sports Inclusion Development Programme

What is the Sports Inclusion Disability Programme?

In 2006, the Dormant Accounts Fund earmarked €2 million nationally for projects which address the imbalance in opportunities for people with physical, learning and sensory disabilities to participate in sport and physical activity.

The Irish Sports Council in collaboration with the network of Local Sports Partnerships identified the need to appoint dedicated Sports Inclusion Disability Officers at county level to address current gaps in the provision of sport and recreation for this target group. After identifying this need, Offaly Sports Partnership undertook consultations with people with a disability, their representataive bodies and service providers with a view to developing a proposal to secure funding for a dedicated officer charged with the task of increasing opportunities for people with a disability to participate in sport and physical activity.

Following this process, an application was made to the Dormant Accounts Fund and funding was approved for two years. In March 2008, Offaly Sports Partnership as a result of this funding, employed a Sports Inclusion Disability Officer to increase the involvement of people with a disability in sport.

In mid 2010, the Dormant Accounts funding allocated to this project was expended. Additional funding was secured from the Irish Sports Council for this project to continue into mid 2011.
