Re-establishment of Community Games in local areas - 2010 / 2011

This project aims to help re-establish community games areas or strengthen existing areas.

Following the success of various projects in different localities (e.g. sportshall athletics and schools superstars, the Partnership made contact with local people to re-establish community games areas or strengthen existing areas.

In 2010, two groups were supported: -
1. Rhode - 68 participated in Community Games Athletics, and Rhode were supported in strengthening their Community Games area.
2. Killeigh - 98 participated in Community Games Athletics, and Killeigh Community Games was re-established.

Both these areas had the largest turnouts at county games finals and a number of the participants have joined mainstream clubs as a result.

In 2011, three groups were supported: -

  1. Banagher - Banagher community games was supported to re-establish
  2. Killeigh - training in community games' disciplines was supported, with 110 children availing of various training opportunities
  3. Tullamore - Tullamore community games was supported to re-estalish. Training in community games' disciplines was supported, with 25 children availing of various training opportunities

A Come Try Day was also held with the ultimate aim of this day being to encourage girls to participate in the range of sports tried on the day. 22 children / teenagers participated on the day, with three sports introduced  (hockey, rounders and timber skittles).

Initial meetings were also held with Offaly Community Games with the intention of rolling out Sportshall Athletics for u13s and u15s subject to a minimum number of areas participating. Unfortunately, due to poor uptake (only two areas), this programme has been deferred.

Keep an eye on our events page for upcoming Community Games events.
