News published 5th May 2010
The recent Annual General Meeting of Offaly Sports Partnership was unanimous in its support of outgoing Chair, Miriam O’Callaghan to serve a further term as Chair of the Partnership.
In her address to members, Ms O’Callaghan started by acknowledging the work of her predecessor Padraig Boland as Chair of the Partnership since its foundation in 2003 up until 2009. She noted that 2009 had been a challenging year for the Partnership given the changed economic circumstances in the country but that it was also a very successful year in which a lot of work was done.
She noted particular achievements of the Partnership including all the successes on the sports disability programme, the Partnership’s schools based work and its work with a number of specific target groups including older people and Travellers. She paid tribute to former Olympian James Nolan on the establishment of the FAST Kids programme and noted the profile that this had achieved in the national media. She went on to wish Mr Nolan well in his new role as Head of Athletics with the Paralympic Council of Ireland. She also paid tribute to Pauline Curley, and thanked her for lending her support to the marathon relay held for girls in October. Congratulations were also noted for the county’s junior camogie team, Shane Lowry (Offaly person of the year), the Midlands United Power Soccer team and Orla Grehan (winner of the Junior Volunteer of the Year in the recent National Awards to Volunteers in Irish Sports).
Gratitude was also expressed to the staff of the Partnership, all members of the Board, and the various partner agencies that support the work of the Partnership. Special thanks were expressed to the Irish Sports Council on their continued support of Sports Partnerships during a time of financial cutbacks. She noted that the Partnership is heading into a new five year planning phase and requested the full cooperation of everybody in putting together the new plan.
Emma Jane Clarke from the Irish Sports Council congratulated the Partnership on its massive amount of work carried out in 2009 given the somewhat more difficult economic climate experienced. She also expressed her continued interest and the continued interest of the Irish Sports Council in supporting Offaly Sports Partnership into the future.
