Get Ireland Walking's 7th annual national walking week, part of European Week of Sport, kicks off on Monday, 21st September!

The week is a fantastic opportunity for schools, youth groups, communities, and families across Ireland to celebrate the outdoors and experience the incredible physical and mental health benefits of walking.

Get Ireland Walking is inviting everyone to get involved by participating in the themed daily events, or simply by walking at a time and place that suits you. Whether it’s for active travel, mindful movement, social connection, or outdoor recreation, our goal is to inspire long-term, healthy habits. The week will conclude on Sunday, 27th September with National Walking Day: Teen Step Out Day, featuring a special emphasis on youth-led engagement.

How to join in: No matter when or where you walk, please register your activity and share your journey using the hashtag #WalkHikeRunPushRoll.

Daily activities include: -

Monday 21st September – Mindful Walking Day: Promoting mental wellbeing, stress reduction and positive social connection through guided and reflective walks for young people and communities.

Tuesday 22nd September – Equality, Diversity & Inclusivity Day: Celebrating inclusive participation by showcasing walks involving diverse communities, including LGBTQ+ groups, culturally diverse communities and participants with different abilities.

Wednesday 23rd September – Workplace Walking Day: Encouraging schools, youth services and workplaces to support walking breaks and active movement throughout the day.

Thursday 24th September – Active Travel Day: Promoting walking as a sustainable and healthy transport option for teenagers travelling to school, college or local activities.

Friday 25th September – Access for All Day: Highlighting accessible walking opportunities and encouraging participation from people with disabilities, mobility challenges and inclusive community groups.

Saturday 26th September – Happy Hiking Day: Encouraging families, youth groups and communities to explore local outdoor spaces, trails and nature walks together with Mountaineering Ireland.

Sunday 27th September – National Walking Day: Teen Step Out Day: The flagship event of the week, with a strong youth participation focus encouraging teenagers nationwide to get outdoors, connect socially and take part in inclusive community walking events.
