National Walking Week 2023

Wed 30th Aug 2023
Get Ireland Walking's fourth annual National Walking Day takes place on Sunday 24th September this year; as part of European Week of Sport.

It is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the benefits of walking for both well-being and physical health and for everyone to celebrate the outdoors and #WalkHikeRunPushRoll.

Get Ireland Walking is asking people to celebrate National Walking Day across Ireland by participating in at least one of our themes during our walking week of celebrations starting Monday 18th September:

  • Monday, 18th September - Welcome to National Walk Week 2023
  • Tuesday, 19th September - Happy Hiking & Hill Skills Training Day in association with Mountaineering Ireland
  • Wednesday, 20th September - Accessibility & the Outdoors Day: making an Ireland where people with disabilities have equal opportunities to be active in the outdoors
  • Wednesday, 20th September - Nordic Walking in Louth in association with local Ukrainian community groups
  • Thursday, 21st September - Mental Health Day with Mental Health Ireland (MHI): MHI will be asking a diverse sample of members of the public to talk about their experiences of walking in nature and its impact on their mental health and well-being.
  • Friday, 22nd September - Active Travel Day with St Brigid's NS in Meath; and Cork Chamber of Commerce
  • Saturday, 23rd September - Hidden Gems Day
  • Sunday, 24th September - National Walk Day 2023

The most obvious way to celebrate National Walking Day is to take a walk! Whether it's a short stroll around the block or a longer hike in a nearby park, getting outside and moving is a great way to celebrate this day; OR

Why not organise a community walking event, such as a group walk or a walking tour of a local neighbourhood or park or amenity? This is a great way to get friends, families, and neighbours involved and celebrate walking. You can register your Walk Event on our website or you can find a walk near you and participate on the day itself. See www.nationalwalkingdayireland.ie for more information.

We are also asking everyone to spread the word about National Walking Day, share photos and stories of your walks, and encourage others to get out and #WalkHikeRunPushRoll too. Use the hashtag #NWD2023 when spreading the word
