Age & Opportunity is the national organisation working to enhance wellbeing for older people through participation in sport and physical activity, arts and creative engagement, personal development, community collaboration and active citizenship. Age & Opportunity envision a society where all older people can be active, visible, creative, connected and confident about ageing.
Age & Opportunity Active is the national sport and physical activity programme for older people funded by Sport Ireland and the HSE. The programme is designed to get us more active.
The Go for Life Games involve older people in recreational sport. The emphasis of the Games is on participation and fun, played in a non-competitive way. The Go for Life Games include Malai (an adaption of the game of cornhole), Scidils (an adaption of the game of skittles) and Flisk (an adaption of the game of frisbee and horseshoe pitching). Older adult groups can get in touch with Age & Opportunity or their Local Sports Partnership to organise an “Introduction to the Go for Life Games” workshop in their community.
PALs (Physical Activity Leaders) is an initiative which trains older people how to lead sport and activity sessions in their local groups and communities. Anyone training to become a PAL will need to attend six different workshops (five hours each) and engage in both practical and theory work to ensure they receive all the knowledge and skills to lead their local group in physical activity. This initiative is free to participants. PALs have played a pivotal role in re-invigorating community groups after the Covid-19 Pandemic. Anyone interested in knowing more about PALs can get in touch with Age & Opportunity or their Local Sports Partnership
CarePALs trains those working or volunteering in care settings to lead suitable physical activities with people in their care.
PPALs empowers older adults with Intellectual Disability (ID) to take a leadership role in promoting physical activity among their peers.
Fitline is a free telephone mentoring service which encourages participants to start getting more active. For further information e-mail or call 1800 303 545
